Should you enforce the rules or not?

I got an email recently that basically said:

You tell us not to be “everyday sadists” who enjoy enforcing the rules (which I don’t; I hate enforcing the rules).

But when I don’t enforce the rules, I feel like I’m not doing my job.

I am confused.

Should I enforce the rules or not?

This is the wrong question.

The question assumes there are only two choices:

  • Enforce the rules.
  • Don’t enforce the rules.

That’s not true.

Think of all of the different ways you can enforce the rules:

  • With annoyance & anger.
  • With disgust & contempt.
  • With fear & timidity.
  • With compassion & empathy.

Rules are good. They keep everyone safe and keep everything running smoothly.

Except for “bad rules” which should be eliminated, but that is an email for another day!

You absolutely should enforce your rules.

But—and this is THE key—you should enforce them with compassion & empathy.

It is better for the person who broke the rule…and it is better for you.

Have a great week!

Peace,

Ryan
