“People don’t call them mentally ill.  They call them jerks.”

If you don’t understand “personality disorders,” then you don’t understand homelessness.

Why?

Because 92% of chronically homeless individuals suffer from one or more.

And 10-20% of the general population does too!

Next week’s webinar is my interview with Gregory Lester, Ph.D.

Dr. Lester is a clinical psychologist, and one of the leading experts on personality disorders.

In the interview, Dr. Lester offered this quick non-clinical test for figuring out who has a personality disorder:

  1. The person is frequently surrounded by upset, confusion and conflict.
  1. The person repeatedly triggers annoyance and irritation in you.
  1. People talk unkindly about the person, saying things like “inappropriate,” “rude,” “jerk,” etc.

Do you see the problem?

One of the biggest challenges of a personality disorder is that it doesn’t look like a mental illness.

As Dr. Lester says, “People don’t call them mentally ill.  They call them jerks.”

While they don’t look like it, personality disorders are very much a mental health disorder.

Just as importantly, there are specific tools and techniques that you can use to reduce problems when working with someone with a personality disorder.
