This week’s live training is an interview with Iain De Jong on how communities can reduce or end encampments.
During the interview, we discuss Iain’s five step plan for compassionately ending encampments:
- Step 1: Define community values – Different stakeholders have different goals that have to become aligned.
- Step 2: Coordinate a response with clear senior leadership – You have to bring together local government, street outreach, service providers, operations and public safety.
- Step 3: Prioritize which encampments to address first – Will you start with the easiest, the hardest, the one with the most complaints, or something else?
- Step 4: Engage with the encampment – Each person needs an individualized plan.
- Step 5: Implement the plan – Smaller encampments (less than 12 people) can be resolved in 6-8 weeks. Larger encampments can be broken into clusters.
Iain concludes our discussion with the top mistakes that communities make.
To manage expectations, this session is NOT for:
- An organization that is looking for an easy fix to a few tents on or near their property
This session IS for:
- Organizations or communities looking for a comprehensive process for reducing or ending encampments in their community.
- Employees who do street outreach.
Have a great week!
Peace,
Ryan
