On Thursday I’m doing a live Q&A for member organizations.
Here is a question someone sent me recently and my reply:
Dear Ryan,
I work at a library.
We have a patron who appears to be homeless.
We have a bag of toiletries for him and an unused cart that he can use for his supplies.
How do I offer him these objects without offending him (by making the assumption that he is homeless?).
Katherine
Dear Katherine,
Thank you for your question (and kindness).
In situations like this, I prefer to offer someone a “menu” of services.
Include stuff you would offer anyone (programs, computer lab, tax help, whatever) and then casually “slip in” poverty-related offerings like toiletries.
Then it just sounds like you offer this to everyone.
He is free to take you up on any of your offers (or not) without feeling like you are singling him out for charity.
Have a great day!
Peace,
Ryan
