Does your staff face any of these problems?
(Excerpt from Homeless Clients training)
- Being yelled at by customers
- Customers who are drunk/high
- Panhandling (asking staff and/or other customers)
- Unwanted attention/inappropriate comments
- Having to break up fights or call the police

If your organization serves troubled patrons (those experiencing homelessness, drug addiction, mental illness, trauma, etc.), you know their behaviors can be challenging for front line staff.

Homeless Clients: Compassionate Solutions to Problematic Behavior
Without training, staff typically deal with problem behaviors in one of two ways:
Picture
They do nothing because they are SCARED.
They are afraid of saying the "wrong" thing.
They are afraid the customer will become agitated and make a scene.
They are afraid the customer may become violent.

They respond in a way that makes the situation WORSE.
They use threats that the customer doesn't respond to.
They raise their voice which escalates the conflict.
They use body language that increases tension.
Both strategies are not good.

I started volunteering at my local homeless shelter - Hesed House - when I was 13 years old. Now I'm the Executive Director.

In the last two decades, I've met tens of thousands of homeless individuals.

My trainings are based on my experience and a philosophy rooted deep in my soul.
  1. I believe that every human being is worthy of basic human dignity (without exception).
  2. I believe that people are basically good, and - when treated with respect and care - most people most of the time will respond in kind.
  3. I believe that compassion and empathy are not weaknesses. In fact, compassion and empathy are the most powerful tools for creating a more just world.
  4. I believe that compassion and empathy are not enough. We also need skills and practice to make compassion as effective as it can be. We need "practical compassion" in order to change the world.

I hope you enjoy this free training. If you have any questions about the training or our Homeless Training Academy (which includes over 14+ hours of training plus a new training added monthly), email me at Ryan@homelesstraining.com.
